What do I cover a painted wooden buffet with so things won't stick to it?

Question by Lola76: What do I cover a painted wooden buffet with so issues will not stick to it?
We have a developed in buffet shelf in our dining room. We feel it was at first created of MDF. The paint was chipping away so we sanded and repainted it. Now we are frightened that if we place anything on there long term, it will stick to the paint. I typically put frames on this lengthy shelf and they will most likely bond to the wood b/c it really is newly painted. Should I cover with some type of lacquer or polyurethane so it will dry with a nice sound complete?
