How to construct legs for a sideboard/buffet table?

I am taking an aged bookcase, and turning it on its side to create a sideboard (buffet) to go along my dining room. What supplies need to I use to produce the legs? It needs to be raised by about one.five or 2 feet. I am not positive if I need to use wood or metal, and how I would attach the legs.
