How many watts of lighting do I need over a dining table?

Issue by Ferg2k: How several watts of lights do I need above a dining table?
I foolishly bought a pendant lamp with only a one hundred watt halogen light bulb for my eating region. Now that I've made the decision to substitute it with a bigger chandalier, how many watts of light need to I be searching at? I do have a Lutron dimmer, so it will be adjustable. Is total wattage even what I need to be looking at? Is there some other measurement to contemplate?

Simply because my eating place has a sloping roof, I can actually only do a single chandalier or pendant lamp. A single pendant lamp will never be bright enough -- so which is out. Most chandaliers tend to have lamp shades that emphasis upwards, whereas I know lighting for a dining table need to largely focus downwards -- to draw folks into the eating location.

What are my possibilities? For what it's well worth, I extremely much want a contemporary, modern layout.
